June was my aunt. I remember her vividly from my younger years. I stayed with her for a couple days once and she took me shopping and spoiled me. Several years later she lived with me and my two oldest children for several weeks before moving back to TN. A couple years later she came to visit and did some shopping and spoiled my kids. There were times when she was very generous. Times when that she taught me something. We camped together, road motorcyles together, canned beans together. made chicken and dumplings with the rooster she caught in my backyard, always made us welcomed to visit her with big meals and of course fishing trips and lots of fried fish to eat. She had some bad times, grew up in difficult situations, made poor choices. Yet through all it my dad, her brother, loved her. She looked up to him as no other. They both got sober, she much later than him and he helped her through that time. She never had a bad word to say about my dad. It pleases me to know they are together and have joined their mom.

Story shared: simple times

I had not met June until November 2017; however, I spent time with her almost every week for the last 10 months of her life. Thus, her stories were new to me. Some of my favorite stories were about fishing, since that made her more animated then many other stories. While we did not get to go fishing together we often “strolled” the grounds exploring what flowers and plants had bloomed, stopping to notice the details such as color or texture. We would finish those adventures by going down to the creek and watching the birds and looking for small aquatic creatures. We told tales about each of our cross-country motorcycle camping trips.

When June was upset I just sat with her because I experienced her as a woman who had many internal conflicts that she struggled to find good coping skills for. One of my other favorite stories were about the adventures as a little girl when pappy hitched up the mules, Kate and Jet, and they went about the countryside.

Grandparents, do not under estimate your influence as in June’s last months she very frequently called out “Pappy”. Be the Pappy your grandchildren remember when they remember little else.

Thank you, June, for helping me learn the value of the sharing lazy time together and reveling in the simple things that can make life rich.
