Obituary for LTC (Ret) Mark Chaney
LTC (Ret) Mark Chaney, age 68, died on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at his home in Clarksville.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 26, 2017 at the chapel of McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home with the Rev. Cliff Wright officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 9 a.m. until the hour of service on Friday. He will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, at which time Military Honors will be rendered.
Mark entered into this life on November 12, 1948 in Ogden, Utah, son to LTC (Ret) Hugh Franklin Chaney and Lillian Rose Nagle Chaney. He entered service into the Army in 1969 and served in the F Troop 9th Cav. during his first tour of Vietnam where he was wounded from a gunshot in his leg. He returned to Vietnam for a second tour as a gunner on a Loach helicopter. He was a decorated war hero and was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device, the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, nineteen awards of the Air Medal, and other service and achievement awards and the Aircraft Crewman and Parachutist badges. After the Vietnam war, Mark worked in Acquisitions and had 18 years in Army Research and Development projects, most notably working on the early designs of the Humvee Military vehicle. He later received his Master's degree from Michigan State University and continued to serve an amazing career in the U. S. Army. He was stationed at Fort Derussy, Hawaii; Ft. Meade, Maryland; Ft. Campbell, KY; Ft. Bliss TX; Ft. Benning, GA; Ft. Belvoir, VA; Selfridge Air National Guard Base (TACOM), MI; Ft. Leavenworth, KS; and Ft. Knox, KY. Mark's last assignment was at the Pentagon where he worked directly under the Secretary of the Army.
Following retirement, Mark was a Civilian Contractor for United Defense and Raytheon Corp. He was Past President of the Rotary club in Elizabethtown, KY and a member of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association.
In addition to his parents, Hugh and Lillian of Nevada, survivors include his wife Mary M. Chaney; his children, Christina (Jon) Clark and Lon (Alyson) Chaney; his grandchildren that he dearly loved, Maggie Clark, Molly Clark, and Jack Chaney, all of Clarksville; and brother, Lon Kenneth Chaney of Nevada. He is preceded in death by his older brother, Warrant Officer 1, (KIA) Arthur Fletcher Chaney.
